Schizophrenia is a complex brain disorder that affects more than 21 million people worldwide. The disease frequently leads to persistent disability and impaired social and cognitive function. Due to the complexity of the disease the cause is not fully understood, though a growing body of evidence implicates alterations in the function and morphology of interneurons in the cortex, and differences in their distribution across cortical layers (Batiuk et al, 2022, Sci Adv).
