Therapeutic antibodies that block the programmed death-1 (PD-1)-programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) pathway are able to produce anti-tumourigenic effects in a variety of cancers. Evidence suggests that susceptibility to anti-PD-L1 agents is dependent on a tumour’s immunological phenotype. Checkpoint blockade by anti-PD-L1 agents depends on the presence of immune cells to act upon. Prior to the publication of our collaborative TGFβ1 attenuated tumour response to PD-L1 blockade by contributing to exclusion of T cells study, this was uncharacterised in metastatic urothelial carcinomas (mUCs).
The aim of this analysis was to identify biomarkers associated with response to treatment and survival and to investigate the relationship between immunological phenotype and response.
